Of Masks and Men-and Women, No children under 5

I hope this post finds you safe and healthy amidst the chaos, crisis, and cruel twist of events the world is currently trapped. I find the juxtaposition of the waters, skies and birds and wildlife with their unabashed freedoms to thrive vs. the human who has failed the aforementioned, and now endures its folly, an interesting study.

There is comfort in knowing that Verizon recorded a spike in telephone calls at the beginning of the virus. World strife need not escalate with family rifts!  Yet, now in week 9 or 8 or 3 or never, of either lock-down, shelter-in-place, stay at home or head to the bar, depending the geography and politics of the county you inhabit, Verizon says things are getting back to BC, before Covid, telephone calling down, but gaming and collaboration tools’ (read Zoom) is up.  Collaboration tools?  We will need a whole new encyclopedia of terms for 2020.

Just a few short months ago the tag line was ‘Bring Back the Roaring Twenties’.  Some similarities:

1)     Prohibition-we don’t have this, thank god, in these 20s.  I have devised the drive thru alcohol pick up, no touch shopping.  I call Ryan, my local sommelier turned liquor store owner, pay by Am Ex, drive into the lot, honk, pop the trunk, wave bye-bye.

2)     Women’s right to vote-We’ve got Pelosi and a VP pick of a woman to save Biden’s ass.

3)     Mickey Mouse was born-and yes, this should have a drum roll and chorus.  He’s back!

4)     The NFL was founded.  Maybe a game this 2020, but no audience members.

5)     First Winter Olympics-no Summer Olympics

We have had two social distancing visits with an elderly friend in the neighborhood who doesn’t get out much, except to the mailbox in front of her house.  I have taken up a few new pastimes during the stay at home edicts, one of which is bar tending. I have a glorious array of pretty bottles, perfectly aligned and mood lit, for the classes to begin.

The other, perhaps more germane to my life, The Science of Well Being, taught by a Yale professor, Dr. Laurie Santos.  I can now make a mean Frozen Daiquiri or Mint Julip whist pondering the possibility that I need to throw out all my sacred cows and forge a fresh way towards happiness. I think I shall just pour another gin and tonic.  Extra lime please.

It is a sunny yet cool day and I have just been to the farmers’ market where one can enter from one direction, exit from the other and while away the time standing in lines of 6 foot distancing and wondering just what the hell is happening.  We must wear masks in public and should I stumble upon a poor soul who has been living in the hapu’u for the last 61 days and going bare-faced in public, I am inclined to dial 911 to report a crime.

There are many interesting things about masks.  Add a pair of Ray Bans and the entire thing becomes dystopian.  You must admit there is something very wrong when Martha Stewart’s website boasts of the ‘perfect instructions for making a mask’.  I am not concerned about the ‘perfect’ because that is a synonym for Stewart, it is make-a-mask day that is disconcerting.  I am concerned that the Kardashian’s haven’t announced their line of designer masks for sale online.

This alone does not bode well for the economy.  Come on Kim and Kanye, where are you when the economy needs you?
