America; The Land of Opportunity

I talk to friends and family scattered across the globe, now more than ever. We compare notes, commiserate and conjecture on the future of the world regarding Covid, elections, missing in action reports about FLOTUS, potential governor kidnappings, climate change and general discussions of other uplifting subjects. The one thing we agree on, from South Africa to Switzerland, France to the UK, we are all going to be signing up for time share weeks at Betty Ford when all this over.

Which begins the next subject, when will this be over?

I have heard medical doctors on both sides of the fence. One repeated conspiracy theories regarding the end of the virus after November 3 election.

I changed doctors.

Another claims the curse will go away one day, over, zip…zam..zowie..swoosh, just as they heard the 1918 virus disappeared. If you dig deeper, the 1918 virus wasn’t here today and gone tomorrow. It faded because of many of the same practices, now more political statements than trusting medical facts; wearing a mask, not gathering in groups, isolating those infected, and social distancing.

All of this conjecture leaves one with a neck ache reminiscent of John Isner defeating Nicolas Mahut in the longest match in tennis history — a five-set ordeal that lasted 11 hours 5 minutes spread over three days in June 2010. Our Covid medical mess has been going on for six excruciating months with no end in sight, unless you lean right, far right. Your mask-less leader, not my president, has beaten the virus and rides the backs of the 216,000 (to date) who were not as fortunate. Whip lash takes on a new meaning as the masses attempt to make sense of the epic mixed messages pitting medical professionals against the court jester and his clown coterie.

Back to more relevant issues, like the Betty Ford Clinic. The clinic in Rancho Mirage, CA, rated number one by those folks who rate those types of businesses, doesn’t give the criteria for its number one pole position, but at $1,200 plus a day, the comments are as specific as the need to bring your own bedding as the supply chain doesn’t include Porthault. What would Betty say?

When you look at published statistics “As stay-at-home orders began in some US states as a mitigation strategy for corona-virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission, Nielsen reported a 54% increase in national sales of alcohol for the week ending March 21, 2020, compared with 1 year before; online sales increased 262% from 2019.” That was in the first couple of weeks. Imagine those stats now!

OMG takes on new meaning. Those who are interested in profiting from Covid either need to schedule the opening of a new treatment facility in 2021 or get into online sales.

America, the Land of Opportunity. Just remember to pack the bedding, stay socially distanced and wear a mask and have one for me.
